The Sheet Behind the Hum-

English 원문
The fourth sheet in a neat row of safety posters had vanished, leaving only silent staple marks that lined up like little silver dashes. Kit leaned closer and traced the empty rectangle with one fingertip; the hush of the corridor let him catch a distant buzz from the printer area, a pitch wobbling an octave below its usual whirr. That uneven drone pulled him along the carpet, its soft static crackling under every step.
Warm air breathed from the printer vents, yet the drum inside turned no more than a sluggish half-circle before stopping with a dry scrape. A warning lamp glowed, and two corners of trapped paper peeked out. Kit flexed his wrist, pinched the first torn scrap, and eased it free; the lamp dimmed but did not fade. He maneuvered a second piece out, its edge rasping against the roller. Still no movement. For a moment he considered calling Reed at reception, then chose to keep going. The third fragment lay deeper, folded like a tight accordion. Plastic guides refused to bend until he pressed gently and let them spring back; the paper slipped forward, and the printer’s hum evolved into its full steady song the instant the last scrap cleared the path.
Fresh pages flowed onto the tray, and the very poster that had been missing slid on top with a soft flutter. Kit lifted it; the headline formed part of the same bright arrangement he had studied minutes earlier. Somewhere behind him the revived printer continued its rhythmic beat, each sheet landing with a muted thud. He walked back toward the corridor board, sheets rustling against his sleeve, and was reaching for the vacant rectangle when the motion-sensor light clicked off above his head.
