Shell fragments ticked together under the backwash, a tiny rattle that repeated like a slow drum. Hazel knelt beside a shallow runnel where moisture gripped the packed surface, her knees pressing a gentle hollow. With a pale driftwood stick, she aimed to sketch a wide spiral before the returning tide climbed any farther. The first loop flowed easily; damp grains slid aside and held a crisp shadow along the groove’s shoulder. Wanting deeper contrast, she dragged the stick once more over the same path, pressing harder to widen the trench.

The fresh edge looked sharp, yet the outer sand began to crumble when a light breeze swept stray grains across it. She scooped a band of wetter sand from nearer the water and packed it against the spiral, raising a neat ridge. Not satisfied, she returned with a second load, then a third, stacking the wall higher until it reached her ankles. Weight spread sideways, and a sudden bubble rose from a crab burrow beneath, sagging the center like soft clay. A green grasshopper landed on the wobbling ridge, hopped twice, and vanished into the dry sand, leaving the slump obvious. She let the driftwood pause in mid-air, shoulders tight, while foam began to ascend the beach in longer surges.

The ridge’s middle layer had been pressed in last, so she slid the stick under that segment and levered it out. Wet sand fell with a muffled thud, water drained through the exposed gap, and the remaining wall tightened against the groove. If she had stopped after the first addition, the collapse would not have stolen those minutes. She smoothed the top edge quickly, tracing once with the driftwood’s rounded side, then stepped back beyond the runnel. Between the bright foam and her drying footprints, the spiral’s dark groove lay unbroken, its inner rim still beading tiny droplets.
