English 원문
"Whose loop is this?" Grant pointed at a dark crescent impressed in the mirror-smooth sand, its rim catching a thin glare from the afternoon sun. Mom sat on a striped blanket beyond the dry border, her book held just where light struck the page. Grant stepped into the writing zone, ankle bones splashing in a shallow film that flowed back toward the sea. He chose a long piece of driftwood from the collection point and gripped it like an oversized quill. A playful breeze crossed the open beach, pushing bright reflections across the wet ground while scattering pale grains from the dry ridge. Grant began to inscribe larger circles, hoping the shapes would stay visible until Vera, arranging shells near the seaweed drift line, looked up. He had spent the first minutes carving smooth curves, and the bottom edges had been almost complete when a wider wave advanced. Foam slid over the grooves; shadow-edges faded; the lower strokes were being carried away, suspended bits of sand letting the line drift away before his eyes.
Water retreated and left fine streaks of brightness in each deepened channel, so Grant adjusted. He kept the same tool but pressed the rounded end harder, widening each furrow. He angled the stick slightly, allowing reflected-gleam on its wet side to guide his depth. A second surge reached farther, erasing the same section once more; this time only half the curve remained, as though it had been carefully cut. He shifted two steps landward yet stayed on firm damp ground, where a faint tincture of pink from the slanting sky made the surface glow. The line re-formed, though its upper half now stood thicker than the washed portion below. Beyond his feet, the shallow runnel altered course and poured a thin ribbon of light straight through the letter, adding an unexpected gap that no stick could mend before the tide returned. Grant exhaled, lifted the driftwood, and traced one final accent above the break, letting scattered droplets spark against dimming sand. High overhead, a gull rolled beneath the sun, tilted its wings, and cast a swift, precise shadow that skimmed the broken pattern before gliding toward deeper shimmer near the tide line.
