He shifted two steps landward yet stayed on firm damp ground, where a faint tincture of pink from the slanting sky made the surface glow. Beyond his feet, the shallow runnel altered course and poured a thin ribbon of light straight through the letter, adding an unexpected gap that no stick could mend before the tide returned. Grant exhaled, lifted the driftwood, and traced one final accent above the break, letting scattered droplets spark against dimming sand. High overhead, a gull rolled beneath the sun, tilted its wings, and cast a swift, precise shadow that skimmed the broken pattern before gliding toward deeper shimmer near the tide line.
