English 원문
A metallic ping rolled down the corridor as a thumbtack bounced on the waxy floor, then slid toward the drinking fountain. Stella crouched, the cool surface pressing against her knees, and scooped up the runaway pin. The bulletin board behind her vibrated softly under passing footsteps, and six wide sheets—each showing cardboard towers, painted roads, and a ridged abutment supporting a model bridge—waited for fixing. She valued the coloured tacks because only they matched the dynamic skyline her class had drawn. Two sat already between her fingers; four more were needed before the bell. She pried away a faded notice, its paper brittle and dry, and three extra tacks came free. Five in total—still short.
Felix crossed behind her, balancing a plastic tray of markers. The loose tack box in Stella’s pocket rattled as she followed the earlier ping to the fountain. She had not noticed that the floor around the button felt slightly damp. While her fingertips pinched the sixth tack, her elbow brushed the metal pad; water hissed out in a clear arc, splashing onto the polished surface. The thin stream glided like oil, found the slight slope toward the stairwell, and disappeared over the first step. On the landing, the rivulet mingled with chalk dust, forming a gritty film that spread further. Felix’s shoe met the slick edge; he tilted, the markers clattered, and their plastic barrels rolled back toward the board in widening circles. If the fountain kept running, the papers would soak through and the cardboard metropolis might sag before anyone noticed.
Stella planted her palm on the cold fountain pad and forced it upward; the water cut off with only a faint sigh. She dragged a nearby rubber dustpan across the wet path, edging the flow into a floor drain. A single red marker bumped against her shoe, nudging the last tack onto her instep. She pressed that final pin through the top sheet just as the bell rang. The empty tack box rocked gently against the cork, nudged by the returning sway of students in the hall.
