"See that cloudy stripe?" Gwen pointed at the back of the plastic chair. The chair caught the low, honey-coloured light of late afternoon, and the mark shimmered like thin milk across the ochre surface. Their wash basin, brimming with warm suds, sat on a wooden bench; beside it floated the swollen yellow sponge. Gwen aimed to rinse the chair before the soap cooled. She dunked the sponge, watched it swell with almost a gallon of scented water, and hurried along the drip path. A brick buttress beneath the garden tap steadied the bench as she squeezed, yet the burst ran down the chair in uneven sheets. When the plastic began to dry, the same stripe returned, a pale ghost of soap tracing the meter-long backrest.
Felix, arranging tools at the staging edge, tried to compartmentalize the damp and dry sponges, but bubbles kept gathering around his wrists. The rinse bucket had been filled with nearly a gallon of clean water at the start of the afternoon; it had been clear ten minutes earlier, yet copper-tinged foam now whirled inside. Gwen repeated her rinse—same method, same stubborn stripe. She paused, then slid a small metal scoop from a drawer under the bench; the scoop was usually for birdseed, yet it would serve as a new tool. Dipping it deep, she stole the clearer water near the bottom and poured a gentle sheet across the chair. The stripe thinned, though a faint hazy line still clung where the earlier rinse had dried. Then the scoop’s narrow handle bent, too soft for the weight, and a rivulet splashed over the staging area, soaking a sponge Felix had saved for polishing.
The work halted while fresh amber droplets slid off the chair edge. Gwen rubbed her forearms, noticing faint red bands where sponge edges had pressed again and again. A tingle lingered along her thumbs, and fine lemon crystals clung there; each time she flexed, a quick spark of cold chased across the skin.
