An antiseptic tang drifted from the reception desk while Dean, a youngster holding his grandfather’s prescription card, leaned over the form-filling table. Vinyl chairs behind him released a hushed, faint squeak whenever someone shifted, but his focus stayed on the clipboard. The metal clip, polished by many hands, showed surprising resilience; it resisted his first tug before springing open. The visitor list had been printed by an earlier shift and lay beneath the clipboard. He had already filled address and date when the ballpoint’s line faded into pale indentations. He shook the pen, clicked its cap twice, and pressed harder, yet only grey scratches evolved along the signature box. Through the brightly lit automatic entrance, a sudden warm gust swept in, flipping a loose consent sheet. The fluttering page skimmed across his wrist and nudged a stack of blank forms. The top clipboard slid toward the edge like a slow raft.
Before the clipboard could fall, another breeze followed, stronger, as the outside door opened again. The moving air tipped the plastic cup; one fledgling rollerball tumbled out, bumping along the tabletop. Dean lunged, trapping it before it dropped. If the gust grew stronger, the whole stack would slide, yet the corridor stayed still. The queue number had been called again, yet no one stood, so time allowed a second try. The new pen felt lighter, and its ink had been stored upside-down; faint blue already glimmered at the nib. He angled it flatter than before and traced over the half-formed letters. Each stroke darkened, the grey scratches gradually evolved into bold marks, and the form finally looked complete. As he shaped the final digit, the cartridge coughed empty, leaving a pin-sized dot beside the line. Dean placed the spent pen down and its loosened cap spun wider across the laminate.
