A beetle tried to leap away from the falling bits, tapping the timber frame as it escaped. Jonas wheeled back, and gravel skittered under the wheel like dice until he steadied the handles. Jonas paused; the hose reel’s snap repeated, and water began to hiss through pipes below the gravel. He knelt and pressed an ear to the plank; warm wood vibrated like a slow drum beneath the rush. Someone had fixed the hose reel, and the stronger flow now warmed the strip above the pipe. If the spigot loosened again, water would burst sideways, so Jonas hurried to collect a final scoop before pressure dropped. The third shovelful landed with a satisfying clump; the three layers now touched the timber edge and hid every speck of soil. He brushed stray crumbs aside, and the newly spread surface fell silent except for beetle feet ticking over the blanket. Jonas stepped back down the path; compost dust streaked the pail rim, and dark smudges crossed the plank where his shovel scraped.
