"Two sheets left," Amos murmured.

He lifted a crisp page from the bench, the surface cool against his thumbs while a teacher marked the chalk circle below. Earlier that morning, eight vibrant sheets had been stacked there, but small flights and re-folds had reduced them to this final pair. Amos planned three scoring throws, imagining a tidy cascade of white planes landing inside the dusty ring like dominoes. He pressed a long center crease, a soft crack running along the grain, then folded broad wings for lift. A brief surge of wind tugged at his hair as he climbed the slope to the launch line beside the ribbon. The first plane swept outward, flashed bright against the grass, and dropped three paces short, nosing into damp shade. Cold dew softened its tip, stealing the paper’s resilience; he retrieved it, noting the bent nose couldn’t fly again.

Back at the flat stone adjustment area, he set the damaged plane aside and studied the remaining sheet, honey-pale under sunlight. He had hoped for distance, yet the shrinking supply forced a realignment of ambition: one careful throw would be enough. He clipped a single paper clip on the nose, folded narrower wings to cut drag, and pinched their edges upward for balance. A gust rattled the ribbon leftward; if the breeze shifted again, the flight might drift right before touching down. Amos inhaled the warm hay-like smell from the sun-bleached grass, then raised the plane level with his eyes and released. The plane glided straight, caught a tiny sideways tug, and curved gently, its whistle thin but steadier than the earlier launch. It slipped across the chalk edge, rolled once on the dry patch, and stopped inside the circle, wings shimmering in late light. Amos jogged downhill, left the final unthrown sheet on the bench, and watched grass blades sway while the white triangle waited quietly.
