English 원문
The slicing machine’s guard clanged against its rail, sending a brief shiver through the stainless-steel counter. Vivian eased a square loaf onto the ridged conveyor, the warm crust pressing softly under her fingertips. Beside her, Troy steadied their shopping cart; the front wheel dragged with gritty resistance each time he nudged it. They had already picked up a box of dinner rolls so light that the paper lid bent at a gentle touch, and both children hoped the rolls would stay airy. Yet the loaf still needed slicing. A plastic pusher board, cool and slightly slick, lay near the machine, and Vivian lifted it like a ruler, trusting its precision. Within seconds, the loaf had been guided through the blades by the plastic board, crumbs scattering in quiet bursts.
The final blade stopped, but the vibration travelled into the counter and through Troy’s cart handle. The stuck wheel jolted, and the box of rolls skidded across the wire basket, its corner folding inward. The warm crusts inside began to soften where the lid pressed them. Vivian noticed the dent and tried to reconcile neat sandwich slices with the now-squeezed rolls. Troy offered a witty shrug, then lifted the empty pusher board. Using it as a divider, he wedged the board between the rolls and the side panel. The move rescued space, yet the sliced loaf now protruded, leaving its two end pieces unsliced and uneven. Nothing had broken, but one success had clearly bent another.
Vivian slid the loaf, half wrapped, on top of the divider, choosing the thicker heels to cushion any future bumps. The rolls stayed in place, though a faint ridge of flour still marked the spot where the lid had collapsed. Together they steered the cart away, the wheel grumbling but moving. Behind them, a thin scatter of crumbs glimmered on the metal tray and a shallow crease ran across the paper lid—quiet signs that slicing and saving could share the same basket.
