Three cooling streaks of tea had already dried on the sill, and the faint yeast-like smell of the cup hovered over the lower pane where condensation lay thick and milky. Flora’s fingertip traced a tight curve through the fog on the upper pane, the glass releasing a coppery tang while tiny droplets dispersed along the fresh line. A striped cat on the radiator lifted its nose, twitching at the brackish scent blown in each time rain smacked the outside surface. Without naming a plan, Flora let the stroke grow into the outline of a cat ready to prance. The upper pane, cooler than the frame, began to clear too quickly; the shining shape dulled as vapour thinned, and a dry straw-husk note drifted from the curtain brushing the wood beside her.

She drew closer and breathed against the cat’s fading back. Warm breath, tasting faintly of ginger biscuit, laid a new cloudy film that revived the picture. The fresh moisture, however, rolled downward in slow, bumpy beads. Those beads slid onto the lower pane where a broad lobster sketch waited, its claws dark against the pearly fog. Each droplet gouged a channel through the shell lines, leaving the drawing patchy and streaked. Flora paused, her shoulders tightening; the cat on the radiator padded away, unimpressed, leaving only a faint oily wool smell in its place. A second later she lifted the cloth from the sill, noticing how its linen fibres carried a chalk-dry aroma. She dabbed the runaway beads before they could wreck more of the lobster, though the dabbing thinned the upper fog again.

If the steam from her tea rose any higher, new mist would cover everything, so she slid the cup toward the curtain border. With the tea moved, she accepted that the lobster now showed uneven stripes where water had leaked, and the cat above crouched lower than first intended, its tail shortened by earlier wiping. Rain kept tapping outside, and Flora pressed one last gentle dot for an eye on each creature. Two uneven silhouettes, one feline and one crustacean, clung to the glass behind slowly crawling beads of water.

若是茶杯的蒸氣再升高些，新霧便會覆蓋全畫。她將杯子推向帷幕邊緣，接受龍蝦留下不勻的條紋，也接受上方貓的尾巴因早先擦拭而短了些。雨聲持續敲窗，她在每隻生物上點下最後一只眼。兩個輪廓—一貓一蝦—呈現不完美的身形，隨著緩慢爬行的水珠黏在玻璃上。
