Harriet pressed two fingertips against the sticky bottle, then released it with cautious force. At first the watered-down colour poured smoothly, yet halfway through the swing the hole clogged and the curve broke. She tapped the bottle’s base; the sudden jerk flung a thick drop onto the damp string. The wet string stretched, the pendulum dipped lower, and its cap brushed a tripod stick. That light contact loosened a small anchoring stone, which rolled over the grass and nudged a metal teaspoon lying beside Glen’s mixing cup. The spoon clinked against the rim and sent tiny violet splashes across Harriet’s forearm, a messy thesis statement about unintended motion.

Glen, still kneeling at the paint-mixing area, had been preparing a fresh batch of orange. He had already rinsed the bottle earlier, so no warning rose from him; the task stayed in Harriet’s hands. She noticed a slight bias in the ground where the tripod leg had sunk, tilting the whole frame. With quiet breath and the same method as before, she steadied the bottle but this time shortened her push, letting gravity rather than muscle drive the swing. The flow began again; however, the clog re-formed when a breeze cooled the thick paint near the hole. Harriet’s shoulders tightened, yet the dog lying nearby—a sandy terrier stretched on cool grass—only flicked one ear at the shifting shadows, offering another perspective on urgency.

Drying time slipped away, and a pale edge started to curl upward. Harriet pinched the string just above the sticky section, lifted the bottle two centimetres, and waited. The thin clog dissolved inside the warmed plastic, and the arc resumed in a quieter ribbon that overlapped the first without flooding it. She stepped back, palms speckled, while Glen slid a fresh stone under the tilted leg, blocking any new drift. Behind them, the pendulum kept tracing narrower loops, and the teaspoon rocked gently inside the cup, ringing once each time its handle touched the glass wall.
