English 원문
The compass needle floated steady in a bright shaft, but Troy's shadow sliced across the dial. He had spent evenings practising with the instrument at home. He squinted, aligning the red tip with the printed meridian on the scratched face. The nearby sunlit moss disagreed with the reading by almost a handspan. A slight vibration shivered through the wooden post when his dog, Raine, pressed a wet nose against it. Marker stones lay in a loose array beyond the flag, waiting to confirm headings, yet he could not choose one. Troy tapped the plastic housing, hoping the principle of magnetism would reassert itself. The needle only wobbled back to the same stubborn angle.
Troy led Raine to the stream bank, where glare from water dazzled their eyes and mud tugged at boots. He rinsed a sole, counting the seconds until the clay turned clear, then flicked droplets aside. While the boot dried, he walked along the eastern edge, where his research notes had warned bark patterns could mislead. Overhead, shifting brightness confused depth, so he traced lines on the map with a stick. A teacher on the hillock called, "Still in sight?" and waited for a thumb-up. Raine bounded into a shallow pool and sent water arching over the bank. The splash hit marker stone four, loosening its base where clay already showed tiny cracks. Water trickled beneath the slab, softening the supporting clay; the slab slid an arm's length downhill and nudged a brittle twig. The twig rolled across damp leaves and tapped an old tin lid. The lid clinked forward before settling flat, its movement already smaller than the first splash.
Raine burst toward the hillock, jaws clenched on the compass, drops flying from each stride. The dog paused, released the instrument onto a sunlit patch, and the tin lid still glimmered near the flag's pole. He lifted the compass, stepped clear of the damp depression, and the needle's next oscillation settled closer to the moss line. He planted a spare peg against stone four, blocking any further slide. Sun glare bounced from the compass lens, a pin-bright quintessence of midday that drew his gaze outward. From high on the hillock the clearing shrank to a coin-sized ellipse, and Raine's tail kept sweeping arcs through the grass below.
