Soft terry towels had been placed on a chrome rack beside the chair, yet the first splash that brushed Xena’s neck sent a cold thread inside her cape. She had already felt drops slip along her back during earlier visits, and she wanted a tighter seal this time. While the stylist crossed the floor for shampoo, Xena lifted one folded towel and bent it lengthwise; a huddle of black capes on nearby hooks swung slightly as she moved. She pressed the towel under her neckline, letting her shoulders snuggle up against the warm cloth. The faucet had been adjusted by the stylist for a gentle flow, but the single layer sagged, and lukewarm water still found a path.

The rinse began, steady for the duration the stylist always needed. If the gap stayed open, more water would slide inside the cape. Xena reached again, timing her grab between two quick passes of the showerhead. A second towel slid beneath the first, thickening the cushion like a narrow pillow fort built from fabric instead of pillows. A glossy magazine on the counter lay open on a smiling musician, and its pages fluttered each time the ceiling fan turned. Water now spilled outward rather than downward, yet a thin rivulet crept along the basin rim. She waited until the stylist lowered the spray to rinse the tips, then tucked a third towel edge under the pile; cloth pressed cloth, and the stack locked into place. The next stream met the wall of towels and splashed harmlessly back into the sink. A sudden dip in temperature—caused by the heater cycling—sent cooler water across the towels, but none reached her collar.
