English 원문
Granular frost scratched Emil's glove as he pressed the stone border for balance. A brisk mineral scent rose from the thin ice patch three paces wide in the park courtyard. A faint ridge had been pressed into the surface by last night's freeze. Miles, beside him, drew in the same crisp vapour; it tickled his nose with fizz. Adults chatted near a bench, voices drifting through misty breath. Both boys eyed the cloudy blue-grey lane: each wanted one smooth slide to the far bank before sunlight shrank the sheet. A bent wire sieve, forgotten from last summer’s sandbox, lay on the dry pavement. Emil grabbed it to sweep stray sand, while Miles tucked a ragged camp mop under his arm, aiming to push away the growing film of meltwater. The shared stretch had already narrowed.
Emil stepped first. The air carried a faintly sweet caramel aroma where sun struck the ice, as if warmth coaxed sugary notes from nowhere. He bent, scraping the sieve across gritty crystals; the ring rang spare against the ice and sent a cold iron waft upward. Miles waited on the rim, boot soles squeaking against softening slush. When Emil slid forward, the sieve snagged the frozen leaf. The leaf peeled free with a surprising crack, twisting the tool from his grip. The abrupt snap unsettled his stance, and his heel punched through the thinning edge; icy water soaked his sock with a salty-mud smell. While Emil hopped back onto stone, Miles shuffled in. He pressed the mop head ahead of him, sponge side down. The soaked sponge skimmed a surplus slick of meltwater toward the rim, leaving drier ice behind.
A sudden downhill gust blew across the courtyard, rolling the lightweight sieve across centre like a tumbling coin. Miles tried to intercept, yet the mop slid faster than he expected on the newly dried lane and carried him straight across. He bumped the far bank safely, boot toes sending up a peppery limestone whiff from damp stone. The sieve kept spinning until it tapped his boot and stopped. Emil, now balanced again, laughed through foggy breath and kicked off, using the mop-cleared path. Both boys reached opposite sides at the same moment, exchanged a thumbs-up, then noticed the warm patch of wall where they could thaw hands. They left the tools on the border, and a light iron-cold taste lingered in the air.
