English 원문
Crunching footsteps bruised the fresh crust beneath her boots as Paloma stamped inside the half-made snow fort. Wet flakes kept falling, and they started to accumulate along the top row where she planned to lay the next brick. At the porch supply step, a woven carpet already hid under a fresh blanket, its rough fibers nearly level with the snow. Atlas, the neighbor’s shaggy dog with snow on his muzzle, trotted patiently through the entrance gap. His quick breaths kept puffing white clouds around his head, visible vital signs in the frosty yard.
Paloma’s goal was simple: add one sturdy layer before the snow grew too deep on the wall. She scooped powder from the brick-moulding zone, pressed it hard into the green plastic mould, and tipped out a glossy blue-white block. The glossy block still looked solid under the flat winter light that blurred every edge. Her quick assessment revealed a problem: snow taken from near her boots felt too dry, so tiny fissures already lined its sides. She nudged the crumbling brick aside and slid a spare mitten into her coat pouch. Then she marched toward the deep drift beside the wooden fence, balancing the mould against her hip as she walked.
By the time she returned, a thin crust had been formed along the wall top where loose flakes kept landing. She pressed the new wetter brick into place and, on impulse, trickled a capful of water from the bucket to lock it. Warm water met near-freezing snow, melted a shallow groove, and the brick settled lower than the row beside the entrance gap. That dip let fresh flakes slide inward, building a soft ramp that Atlas immediately tested with his paws.
Paloma had not noticed how the inner faces of older bricks lost moisture overnight; the ramp exposed their pale porous shells. As Atlas hopped off, the weakened edge beside the doorway sagged, tilting another brick outward. Without delay, Paloma slid the shovel under the loose brick, levered it up, and packed handfuls of wetter snow beneath for support. She carefully splashed a thinner ribbon of water across the lifted point on the wall top. Three breaths later, it stiffened into an icy wedge that held the gap walls apart. Paloma was still pressing her gloved palm against that fresh wedge when more flakes drifted onto her sleeve.
