Too Much Soil on the Kiln Dome-

"Fold the foil now." Amos pressed a fingertip along the blue-grey sheet while Cleo twisted the ends around the corn. A plastic penguin, painted frost-white, kept watch at the corner of the prep table, its beak pointing toward the kiln mound across the scorched strip of ash. Amos carried three potatoes to the opening, counted two breaths, then slid them inside on a lattice of pale leaves. Their grandfather raked the last glowing ember aside, so the children kicked steel-grey buckets of loose soil closer. Amos wanted a tight seal, so he shoveled an extra scoop against the left flank; the damp mix slapped into place and began to darken as heat climbed.
A second bucket followed, and then a third: each addition rose higher, until the slope thickened like layered clay on a potter’s wheel. Steam tried to surrender through narrow cracks, yet the extra soil muffled the escape and drove it sideways. A sudden hollow clunk from inside made Amos examine the surface; one block had shifted, letting smoke curl in a crooked ribbon that lodged beneath the heavy overbuild. For a moment nothing moved but the silver reflection sliding across the dome as clouds drifted overhead; even distant grass carried a cool cast, as if dusk arrived early. A faint ticking echoed again, and an uninvited intuition flickered through his thoughts, no louder than a raindrop on glass.
He waited for two slow counts, then pushed his boot against the swollen patch and scraped away the middle layer he had added first. Earth crumbled, fell, and left a slimmer skin that breathed evenly. Fresh steam lifted, straightened, and thinned, his earlier timing now aligned with the gentle hiss. The mound settled; tiny cracks widened, then steadied. Amos tapped the penguin’s head once before stepping back toward the observation bench.
At the same hour inside the farmhouse kitchen, Cleo’s unused foil strips cooled on a chrome tray beside rising dough that spread quietly toward its own edge.
