English 원문
"That pine slot feels narrower today."
Wilder pressed his thumb along the steel-grey shelf edge, tracing the same shallow dent he had noticed during his last visit. A brief cloudburst outside had pushed damp air through the doorway, and the blue-grey breeze cooled the cedar bundles near the entrance while deeper rows looked darker and slightly swollen. Yasmin leafed through ribbon rolls at the wrapping counter, leaving Wilder free to prepare a gift bundle for a friend who enjoyed crisp woodland scents. He began to gather three slim boxes: frost-white pine from the entrance shelf, translucent lavender from mid-aisle, and a pale citrus stick from the warmer back corner. The tissue squares spread across the polished floor softened each footstep so completely that he seemed to walk on air between the rows.
At the sample-burning tray he balanced the first pine stick over the sand bed; silver smoke rose and curved toward the lantern light. Wanting a brighter note, he added the lavender shard, and the fragrances mingled, dense as mist on a blue river. Unsatisfied, he slid the citrus stick beside the others, but the combined vapour grew muddled, and the brass scale’s needle wobbled without settling. He leaned closer; the heavier, warmed shelf boards behind him released extra moisture, thickening every breath until individual notes blurred together. His forehead lowered toward the cool stone counter, and the overlapping aroma refused to separate, like colours mixed too long on a single wet brush.
Wilder straightened and pinched the lavender shard away from the glowing sand, pressing it into a patch of unused ash until its ember dimmed. With that mid-layer removed, the pine thread sharpened again, and a faint citrus edge returned, clean and clear. The scale calmed; its brass pan stopped oscillating after two gentle swings. Wilder wrapped the remaining sticks, tied them with one narrow strip of silver ribbon, and stepped toward the counter where the breeze still rolled through the doorway. He kept pressing the scale’s needle toward the exact line.
