English 원문
Only three strawberry boxes sat on the top layer of the cooled tray, their lids beaded and misted. Larkin slid one forward; cold air rolled over his knuckles, and the ridged plastic felt slick under his thumbs. Amber light warmed the front display, while the back crates felt dry and rough against his forearms when he reached. A peach near the edge showed a thumb mark, a small crater in soft skin glossed by a recent spritz. Pears rubbed gritty under his palm, and a plum’s dusty bloom smudged clean with a light tap of his nail. The brass scale swayed and clicked, the cardboard sign shook on its clothespin, and voices mixed to a steady murmur. A faint red tint from yesterday clung under one thumbnail as he turned the box with a careful twist.
A soft slide of paper came from the path; the bag strap slipped down Hadley’s arm and bunched at his wrist. “It keeps sliding,” Hadley said, shifting the crinkly weight and lifting his elbow clear of passing feet. Larkin stepped over, pinched the rough paper seam higher, and settled the strap in a less scratchy groove. He returned to the tray, the cool air washing his fingers as he reached again. The lid had changed; small beads had merged into a pale streak like an albatross wing across the plastic. When he tipped the box, the streak slid along the ribs and dripped through a slit onto his knuckle. Cold ran across skin, his grip shifted for balance, and the edges pressed ridged lines into his damp hands.
He carried the clamshell toward the narrow gap between stalls, where a steady draft rubbed cool across his wrists. Holding only the corners, he waited as the surface warmed slightly and the fog thinned first near the vented rim. A row inside sharpened into view; one berry showed a pressed side, another sat dry and bright against the wall. Across the aisle, the spritz bottle hissed over peaches, and fresh drops made skins look tight until the water dried. Larkin breathed on the lid once, then let the draft do the work, and the beads shrank into fine rings. He set the clamshell back onto the cooled tray, and two clear beads slid along the lid toward the corner.
