A pale rectangle of sun-bleached wood lay on the far seat, yet no backpack pressed into the grain. Margot leaned close to the curious gap, then shuffled toward the fulcrum centre. Sara, perched on the raised end, held the handle while the plank sank under Margot’s heavier frame. Earlier, a short stroll through a shaded alleyway had warmed their legs. Blue-grey swing chains flashed beyond the frame. Neither carried more than a half-full water bottle, so weight difference ruled the lever. To fight it, Sara edged outward until her boots touched the rubber bumper, yet balance still drifted away. Sand on the plank reduced grip, and her soles slid a finger-width, tilting the board farther. As she slipped, Margot’s bottle, resting near her hip, began a soft roll toward the pivot. A shallow groove had been worn into the timber by months of shoes, guiding that roll like a rail.

The bottle rattled across the pivot, its clear wall spraying a spectrum onto the steel-grey pin. A faint breeze lifted pale dust under the blue-grey shadow the centre post drew across the rubber. The shift dropped Sara to the ground end and heaved Margot upward before she braced with both hands. A smooth pebble Sara had tucked inside her pocket earlier bounced out, drumming toward the fulcrum. Margot slid a hand forward, trapping the stone and inching closer to the centre line. "Almost level now!" Sara called. Her new seat position shortened her lever arm, so the plank floated flat, noses twitching like cautious birds. Sunlight caught the bottle’s label, a cartoon whale wearing a wistful grin, and the bright flare reached Margot’s eyes. Silvery scratches now stripe the plank beside that label where plastic scraped through the sand. Beside those lines, the bottle slowly wobbles toward the scuffed landing zone.
