June shifted, thighs pressing the warm plank, soles scraping the scuffed landing zone while the beagle beside the nearby bench twitched its tail at each dull thud. The plank flexed against their combined mass, and a muffled creak climbed through the metal handle into their wrists. Sun-heated wood prickled their palms; cooler grain hid under the fulcrum’s sharp shadow, a rough unity of timber and grease-dark steel. Sand blown from the sandbox made the surface slippery, so June’s seat kept drifting toward the high end and letting Harris sink. Clouds began to thicken over the meadow beyond the fence, the breeze tilting blades of grass in uneven waves, yet the seesaw stayed locked in its shallow angle.

June’s knees unbent farther, elevating her end for a breath before it sagged again. She gathered three pebbles from the bare earth arc, their edges smooth like river glass. One by one she slid them into the worn groove beside her hip, each new weight tilting the balance, each landing sending a fresh tremor along the board. The first pebble over-corrected; Harris rose too high. A micro-decision followed: he edged nearer the fulcrum centre, elbows tight, shoulder muscles braced. The plank steadied, yet a faint sideways wobble remained. June leaned forward and touched the grease-lined bolt; it shifted a hair’s breadth, revealing that the imbalance lived inside the fulcrum, not their bodies. Realising the groove’s width matched her last pebble, she rolled it between thumb and finger, then let it settle into place. The final stone clicked, her pocket now empty, and the seesaw hovered level, wood hardly moving beneath their clasped hands.
