English 원문
Wet sand hugged Stella’s soles, cooling the thin skin under each arch. A double row of neat crescent dents ran across the writing zone, each dent already glimmering with a thin film of water. A terrier sniffed the track, then bounded away toward the dry shrubbery beyond the compact sand, sending loose grains skittering. Stella crouched, picked up a driftwood stick whose end showed smooth flat cuts, as though a lumberjack had once tested his blade there, and lowered the rounded tip into the damp surface. She traced the first dent, yet the groove collapsed; the sand here sat a little too dry. When she tried again nearer the runnel, an ankle-high wave slid forward and wiped half the outline before she could finish.
She paused, watching the retreating water leave behind a darker patch that looked as flat as slate. A plucky sandpiper darted in, stabbing its beak through the thin skin of sand and leaving fresh crescents identical to the earlier line. "So you made these," Stella murmured, shifting her weight from heel to toes. If she had kept dragging the stick away from the runnel, the rising water would have spared her drawing, but then the surface would have been too loose to hold shape. Instead she dug the stick deeper, letting each passing wave skim the top and polish the edges. Bits of green plankton floated inside the next sheet of water, staining the grooves a pale jade for a moment before slipping back to sea. She followed the bird’s slow steps, carving wider moons beside every fresh print, turning the single-file track into a flowing pattern that echoed the hush of the tide line.
The water finally reached her knees, erasing the first metres yet revealing the shimmer of untouched segments farther inland. Stella stepped back, feeling wet sand cake around her shins while fine grains remained wedged beneath her fingernails, and her wrists buzzed with the steady effort of guiding the driftwood.
