Scrape-tap-scrape—sandpaper hissed over cedar, sending a dusty, nutty scent across the worktable. Poppy steadied the small box lid she planned to decorate, the raw wood still giving off a fresh, slightly sweet aroma. A broad bronze-bottomed saucepan squatted in the centre of the bench, its rim crusted with dried glue that smelled faintly chemical, like old paint water. She had tried to slide the pan aside, yet the sticky ring on its base clung to the board with stubborn grip. Behind her, an adult instructor demonstrated careful filing, while a violinist near the yard doorway plucked a quiet arpeggio; rosin and pine mingled in the warm air. Poppy’s goal stayed simple: fix the carved wooden plaque, perfumed with earthy varnish and edged by a stripe the colour of moss, onto the lid before the glue in her cup cooled.
A patch of sunlight crept along the bench, warmed the saucepan, and softened the glue under it. A soft pop broke the rhythm of tools as the seal loosened; freed weight slid a few centimetres, pushing a ridge of sawdust that drifted up with a floury, dry smell and buried Poppy’s chalk lines. At the same moment, a mild breeze rolled in from the yard, carrying the sharp tang of cut grass and swirling more powder over the marks. Her pencil paused in mid-air. The heavy pan, now warm and faintly metallic-tangy to the touch, no longer blocked only; its solid mass offered a ready press. She brushed the dust clear, spread a vinegar-sharp bead of fresh glue onto the plaque, centred it on the lid, and lowered the diligent saucepan directly on top. The pan’s own warmth thinned the glue; a thin, sweet scent rose as it seeped evenly under the ornament.
Quinn at the neighbouring bench glanced over and said, “Neat weight,” before returning to sanding. The timer on the drying shelf ticked, each click releasing a hint of oily metal into the air. When the bell chimed, Poppy lifted the saucepan. She kept the finished lid in both hands while Quinn, curious, reached for the still-cool box base, and the two pieces drifted apart across the bench in opposite directions.
