The thin strip curled away from the metal armrest the moment his thumb left it, and six coloured threads slipped sideways, breaking the neat chevron he had started last week on this same bench. An adult reading on a nearby blanket glanced up and returned to the pages, while Erik pressed the waxy tape down again. He knew the bench well; a dent under the armrest matched his scissors case, and a scratch in the paint guided his finger to the working thread each visit. Today, though, the tape lacked grip. He tore a fresh portion from the roll, yet the warm stripe of sunlight softened its adhesive, and the new piece lifted as lightly as dry bark.

Around his shoes, two pigeons shifted, one tilting its head toward a glass bead that had rolled beneath the bench. The pattern had been pulled off-line by the slip, leaving a shallow bend across three rows. A breeze crossed the grass, fluttering the free ends of thread so they slapped softly against his wrist. Pressing harder only smeared the coating’s faint chemical infusion across his fingertips; the threads still wriggled free. While reaching for the bead cup he loosened the tension by mistake, and the half-made band curved right, embracing itself in a small coil. He had tried to smooth it flat, yet each tug worsened the twist. A stronger gust pushed the loose tape against the bench’s shade-cooled side, where the metal stayed cold and dust-speckled. There, the tape clung firmly, as if the cooler surface woke its hidden grip.

Erik paused, wrist raised. The same tackiness that spoiled his pattern might steady it. He peeled the stubborn strip, folded its cleaner half over to double the sticky face, and bridged it across the shade–sun boundary like a narrow hammock. The wind lifted the coloured strands again, yet the doubled tape caught each one, holding them taut. Using that sudden anchor, he tied three forward knots and two backward, the chevron straightened row by row. When the bead reached the next gap, he pressed it into place, thinking of the small honor this bracelet would carry to Esme. He eased the tape away; a pale outline of adhesive stayed on the dark paint, and a single grass seed stuck beside it.
