Stone Stack Over a Pine Wedge-

English 원문
A metallic tang sharpened on Sam’s tongue while the breeze sliding along the river cooled from warm to almost cold. Flat granite rested in a loose pyramid beside his knees, their flavors ranging from chalky dust to faint salt as he licked lips between lifts. Rarely had this gravel bar offered stones so thin yet so heavy. Sam pressed a slim pine wedge beneath the third slab, reading micro-wobbles through fingertips before risking the next layer. A slight recess, carved by years of erosion, skewed the fourth stone; the column leaned, corrected, leaned again. “Hold, just hold,” he murmured, breath tasting of iron shavings. The lean grew fanciful, tipping beyond recovery, and the upper stones plummet into the shallows with a clatter softer than surprise.
Water rings widened around the fallen stones; Sam stepped back, wiping chalky residue on shorts, then took a tin cup resting on sun-warmed sand. The brew tasted mellow, almost transcendent, sweet at first, then astringent, as though the leaves were still wrestling with heat. Freya crouched nearby, lining river berries inside a shallow enamel dish. “One quick bite brightens the tongue before the juice finally drips away,” she said. Sam bit a crimson husk; sourness flashed, sugar lingered, and a nascent thrum carried through the knuckles that had failed the tower. Fingers still sticky, he drummed the cup’s rim, spacing beats until stone, wedge, and berry seemed to share one cadence. Nowhere in that drifting percussion could he name a plan, yet the pattern stayed, hanging like unspoken music between them.
As the glare faded, Sam knelt again, selecting two flatter slabs and the pine wedge now faintly berry-stained. At the fourth layer he paused, lowering the stone while ripples from a fish's quick splash echoed the rhythm once beaten on his cup. Only then did he slide the wedge sideways between jagged edges; the stack rose higher, seven heavy pieces sharing that sliver of balance. A stray gust rattled the top, yet it refused to plummet, the centerline held by that unexpected bracing. Sam brushed a thumb over the wedge—morning’s gesture repeated—while the air tasted of copper and the gravel no longer warmed his knees.
