English 원문
Bram slipped between leaning willow trunks and stepped onto the sun-lit gravel bar. His weight pressed a flat slate at the water’s edge, and, like a lever, the stone tipped; trapped water hissed along a narrow groove and spilled back into the river, a tiny mechanism revealed by the simple tilt. The silver thread ran for only a breath before the slate settled, cutting the flow and leaving the groove dark and still. He crouched, palm open, letting the surface warmth of the slate pass into his skin while cooler damp clung beneath. Upstream, Roslyn’s silhouette shifted against the glare, her arms lifting stone after stone. Beyond her the river widened toward a shallow ravine whose far wall glimmered with mica flecks.
He walked toward her, gravel crunching softly, and gathered a disc of river-smoothed granite no larger than his palm. The disc’s upper face felt scorching where the morning sun had baked it, yet the underside remained river-cool, the contrast prickling his fingerprints. Roslyn set a long, narrow slab across two broader rocks; the slab shivered, searching for balance. “Close enough,” she said, though her fingers lingered until the tremor faded. Together they began a new tower: Bram placed the hot disc, Roslyn followed with a cool oval. Each fresh layer erased the wobble below, then introduced its own. A kingfisher’s sudden outburst of wings at the waterline punctuated their quiet work, ripples flashing across the stack like quick applause.
Midway up the column Bram paused. His fingertips remembered the lever-slate from the entry, and he stepped back to fetch it. The slab came free with a wet sigh, revealing a shallow grotto hollowed beneath; beads of water clung to the cave-like pocket, ready to fall. Instead of replacing the slate where it had lain, he raised it onto the growing tower. The groove now perched lengthwise, and when Roslyn poured a palmful of river water over the crown stone, a gleam trickled along the groove, dripped through the hole at its end, and landed exactly at the tower’s central seam. The same trickle that had escaped unnoticed now marked balance; the mechanism Bram had stumbled upon turned into a living level.
They stepped away, letting the column stand alone. Droplets continued to fall in slow rhythm, each one steadying the stack with a soft click more convincing than any measuring tool. What moments before was mere play suddenly offered a spectacle: stones that ought to sprawl across the bar rose like a narrow gate, water silently counting the seconds they held. Roslyn folded her arms, breathed once, and said nothing. Light shifted; the river kept sliding past the column, and Bram’s fingertips rested on the top stone.
