The Dust Swirl Beside the Turning Wheel-

English 원문
Grain hissed between the millstones while, beyond the open loading hatch, water flashed silver under the sun; two worlds ran side by side, dry dust inside, glittering spray outside. Olyvia rested a burlap sack on the bench that always carried another one in earlier seasons, and her glance paused on the empty space beside it. A swallow darted through the rafters, circled once, then vanished through the same gap above the wheel, leaving only the beat of its wings to disturb the steady cadence of oak against granite. Keane’s boots scuffed flour from a worn groove in the floor as he approached, the sound falling neatly into the wheel’s revolving measure.
"Stone feels warm," he said, sliding flattened palms across the turning runner. Olyvia nodded, slackened the hopper spindle, and watched the granular ribbon thin to a trickle. The wheel’s rhythm slowed as upstream flow dipped, so she edged along the gallery toward the lever that narrowed the stone gap. Below the planks, the underpass arching over the race hummed with water that no longer pressed hard at the walls, leaving algae fronds waving without strain. Keane waited, one eyebrow raised; after a breath, Olyvia gripped the iron bar and leaned until the stones nearly touched. Dust rose in a pale spiral and hovered before drifting downward again.
Half a turn later, the wheel recovered speed, and the swallowed grain emerged lighter than down. Olyvia stepped back, pulse easing with the machinery’s restored cadence, yet her gaze snagged on the dust column that still hung near the shaft. Lit from a side window, the swirl resembled a distant quasar, bright around a dark, spinning center, and the comparison lodged unexpectedly, making the familiar mill feel immense and strange. For a blink she forgot the absent sack, forgot even Keane, until the upper stone knocked once against its mate—a brief, offbeat stutter that broke the trance. She tightened her apron knot, searching the floor for fresh flour piling against an unused scoop.
Keane lifted that scoop, weighed it, then set it down carefully on the bench where its partner should have rested. “Fine enough,” he murmured, no more than announcing the obvious. Olyvia offered no answer; her hands brushed excess flour from the sack mouth, cinched the twine, and left the bag standing alone. She backed toward the doorway, shoulders loosening, and found stillness just outside the bar of sunlight. Inside, untouched by her pause, the wheel kept landing one solid paddle after another into the triumphant rush of water, its beat rolling on without regard for the gap upon the bench.
