Everett Uncovers the Grain Gate-

English 원문
Every afternoon, Everett pinched a ribbon of flour between thumb and forefinger; today the pinch lingered warmer than usual.
Outside, the water wheel kept its slow pulse, soaking each plank with steady spray.
A faint click sounded under the hopper each time the pinch loosened, and a wooden tongue rocked forward, releasing another trickle of grain.
Everett had watched the grain sink before, never noticing that the tongue waited for that single tremor of weight.
Now the tiny lever shifted, grain poured, and the tongue sprang back, beginning another quiet wait.
He caught the flash of movement again, tracing cause and effect by sight and by the residual warmth resting on his skin.
Raine, standing beside the sack reel, lifted her own pinch and rubbed it between palms.
"Feels coarse," she said, rolling the grains between fingertips until a faint rasp finally answered her.
Everett nodded, reached for the lever that narrowed the gap between the stones, and met unexpected resistance.
Damp heat from the wheel room had swollen the oak handle, turning the usual quick quarter-turn into a gradual push.
A translucent veil of flour dust floated in the slanted light, dulling the dazzling stripe the open door normally painted across the floor.
Somewhere inside that moving mist, a fragment of barley husk floated downward, landing on Everett’s sleeve like a tiny banner of unfinished work.
He drew breath and tasted the fragrant air, sweet and slightly metallic at the back of his tongue.
After three rotations the wheel sagged into an even slower rhythm, water level having dipped during the dry week.
The expected click under the hopper failed to come at all today, leaving a hollow pause.
Grain mounded above the tongue, heavy enough by Everett’s earlier guess, yet the gate stayed shut.
He tapped the beam lightly with the flat of his hand; no shift followed, only the muted hum of turning stone.
He stepped back, cooled palms against the damp stone wall, then angled the lantern so its warmth brushed the wooden joint.
Moisture hidden in the tongue began to evaporate, and the wood eased forward, releasing a single measured ribbon of grain.
The discovery turned: weight alone failed; only the subtle meeting of softened fibres and gravity allowed the latch to wake.
Everett met Raine’s raised eyebrow and shrugged, shoulders loosening as the wheel resumed its quieter cadence.
The wheel picked up slight speed as upstream flow surged again, and the stones sang brighter.
Raine shoveled fresh kernels into the hopper, leaving Everett near the flour chute for a moment.
He gathered a ribbon of the powder, the motion matching the one that began the afternoon, yet now his fingers closed more lightly, testing yield rather than mass.
The flour slipped between ridges of skin, drifting back into the sack before body heat could stiffen it.
Outside, sun drifted lower, letting cooler air push through the door and thread around ankles.
Everett watched the pale drift settle, then pinched a final ribbon of flour and let it slide away before the warmth could gather.
