English 원문
Every Saturday morning, Cal slid the bench toward the upright with the same slow scrape. Today the glide stopped sooner, caught by a faint snag in the carpet’s nap.
A breath of polish and sweet rot slipped from under the lifted lid, joining the steady iron tang that always rose from the frame. He braced his left foot against the floorboard to regain balance, then tapped the tuning fork against his knee. The pure tone shivered through bone before meeting the warm afternoon air beyond the lid. Across the side table, two cups waited out of habit, steam drifting from one. The other stood dry, its porcelain rim already cool to the touch and faintly dull. The empty place between them marked a rhythm Cal had not yet adjusted to.
He settled the rubber mute between two treble strings, suppressing their voices so a single wire could speak alone. The interior looked orderly as ever, yet a closer glance showed a silent hierarchy. Bright upper courses gleamed, while lower coils wore a glaze of grey, a kind of indoor silt settled after years of vibrating storms. Each twist of the tuning lever drew a mild groan from the stubborn pin. Metal warmed, wood clenched, and the scent of resin sharpened around the open lid. Yasmin shifted on the cane chair behind him and spoke, "Middle register already, Cal." Her voice slipped into the room like another faint overtone and faded away slowly. Cal nodded without turning, his palm hovering an instant above the next key, the hesitation stretching until the fork’s ring finally quenched itself into silence.
When he pressed the A below middle C, two nearly matched frequencies chased one another, producing a wavering pulse that ran through the iron well into his wrists. He eased the lever, expecting the usual tiny correction that would settle the note quickly. Instead, the pin refused its first coax, holding pitch as if welded in place. A second attempt released a flake of hardened varnish from the block below the pin. An old scratch under the dust came to light, as if someone tried long ago to unearth the same reluctant note. Cal halted, wrist still absorbing the string’s after-shiver, then chose a thinner mute and worked the pin back and forth a fraction at a time. The beat between tones slowed, merged, and vanished, leaving the water glass on the table perfectly still.
He returned the mute to the tray and reached for the untouched cup; its rim remained cold, so he set it back where the gap persisted. Sunlight now climbed the bench leg and gently licked the brass pedals beneath the board. Warmth spread through the iron frame a degree at most, enough that the freshly tuned note would wander again before dusk. Outside the window, a branch sagged and rose, casting resin-scented air through the room, while distant traffic hummed without reference to pitch. Light, heat, and faint odors kept folding over one another in slow currents far broader than any pin’s fraction of a turn.
