English 원문
No applause drifted through the open lid when Zinnia pressed the first ivory key. Afternoon sun fell across steel strings, their rows shining like finely stitched metal braid. A quilted cover lay folded over the bench’s backrest, its seams faintly imprinting the felt where it had rested all winter. She wedged a rubber mute beside a middle-octave pair and lifted the tuning lever. She let the kinesthetic memory in her wrist guide a fraction-degree turn; wood resisted then softened. The wavering between test note and fork slowed, paused, and finally vanished into complete silence. On the side table, a pattern of rings began to expand across its surface, marking each settled pitch.
Dawn had found Fintan rolling the same piano across the deserted auditorium floor, wheels clicking over boards long polished by recitals. Stale dust rose with every meter, catching cool light that slipped between balcony rails. At the loading bay, he eased the instrument down a ramp, pausing whenever the weight tipped forward; copper-wound bass strings thrummed inside, answering every bump. A bundled rug softened the van’s interior, yet new scratches crept along the cast-iron frame, pale against darker varnish. By the time roof latches clicked shut, the sky had begun to expand from charcoal to thin rose.
Now, inside the smaller room, those pale scratches suddenly captured Zinnia’s wandering attention fully. She traced one with a fingertip, then hovered above the next key without striking. The instrument carried lines, dots, tiny chips: a secret map of journeys she had never noticed during hurried lessons. Rhythm halted; the ticking mantel clock claimed the air a moment longer than usual. Outside the window, a branch brushed the glass, leaves giving a brief dry whisper, yet she remained at the keys. Fintan, seated nearby, shifted on his chair, cleared his throat, and spoke softly, “Still in tune?” Only his measured breath filled the brief wooden gap between question and answer then. Zinnia replied, “Almost,” yet her hands remained still, shoulders settling as the new map rearranged her task.
Fintan’s boots, resting beneath the bench, still bore auditorium dust; flecks clung to the carpet and gathered around the pedals. When Zinnia resumed, she chose a low note instead of the next chromatic step, letting its broad vibration travel through iron, legs, floor, then glass. Water trembled again, slower this time, each ring reaching outward into the quiet carpeted space before fading. She listened for the beat between string and fork, heard none, and allowed the lever to stay where it was. The faint metallic tang from the freshly turned pin lingered in the still room.
