Across the bench Vernon eased a fresh cherry block from its cloth wrap; the panel dwarfed the postcard plates Farrah handled every day. A faint steam still rose from the stack of damp rice paper, warmth slipping away into the room’s cooler drift. Wood shavings crowded the trough in a multitude of tight curls, their pale grain contrasting the slick darkness building on the slab.

Vernon slid the large block beside her. Its valleys formed a plethora of narrow channels, carved deeper than she expected. Farrah tipped the roller, absorbed in following each ridge, yet the ink refused its usual even spread. At the first pass pools gathered where pressure met the broader lines, leaving dry islands elsewhere. She halted mid-stroke, wrist hovering, then angled the handle so only half the cylinder touched. The block accepted the thinner coat, but shadows of ink clung to the roller’s edge. A single bead trickled toward the corner registration notch, wobbling before settling into the wood’s faint seam.

They laid paper over the inky surface together. Farrah’s heel found the baren’s center and began her familiar circular grind, yet resistance shifted under the larger area; the paper flexed, sending a soft ripple across its fibres. Vernon’s fingers steadied one edge without a word. Outside, a breeze fluttered through the open window, carrying an unexpected passenger: a small peregrine feather spiralled down, glancing off Farrah’s sleeve before landing squarely on the sheet. The baren paused. The feather’s quill left a pin-sharp dent in the damp paper, a tiny intrusion neither hand had invited.

Farrah lifted the corner slowly. Ink released with the usual fibrous whisper, but where the feather had rested, a pale halo interrupted the black abundance, grain lines bending around the blank ellipse. Vernon exhaled once, almost amused, then nudged the feather aside. Farrah set the sheet on the drying line; it bowed under its own weight, the odd mark hovering like an uncharted moon among bold petals. She turned back, reset the brayer on the glass, and rolled—forward, lift, return—while late sunlight slanted across the bench, dulling the slab’s earlier gleam.

兩人合力把紙覆在墨面。法拉用熟悉的圓周推磨動作按壓擢紙，但因版面更大，紙張在受力時產生輕微波動。佛農默默用指尖穩住邊緣。窗外一陣風拂過，帶進一根意外的客人——小隼的羽毛在空中旋轉，輕觸法拉的袖口後，正好落到紙面中央。原本流暢的動作停住。羽毛羽軸在濕紙上留下針點般的凹痕，這是雙手未曾預料的插曲。

法拉小心掀起紙角。纖維與墨相離時發出熟悉的沙沙聲，但羽毛停駐之處呈現淡色的光暈，木紋在空白橢圓周圍微微彎曲。佛農輕輕吐氣，彷彿帶著一絲好奇，然後把羽毛撥到一旁。法拉將這張紙掛上晾線；紙張在自重下微微彎曲，奇異的留白像未知的月亮懸在粗黑花瓣之間。她轉回工作台，將滾輪放回玻璃板，再度推、抬、回，而晚陽的斜光覆在桌面，讓稍早的墨光顯得黯淡。
