English 원문
A single, sharp paw mark disturbed the smooth sand beside the moulding box. Paloma paused, scanning the vaulted shed; rafters stretched overhead like dark ribs, and the charging door glowed deep orange across the span between them.
She set the oak frame on the sand floor, checking its clearance under the furnace’s breath. The steady trickle of coke fed through the hatch kept the glare alive with a kind of sustainability that was more schedule than virtue. A spare mould, packed yesterday as contingency, leaned against the warm brick—ready should any core crumble. Beyond it, a multitude of cooled paperweights lined a stone slab in disciplined rows; each showed the foundry logo except the small cast-iron fox that usually anchored the left corner. Myriad pinprick sparks leapt when Everett chipped flash from a wheel hub. He lowered his hammer and called, “Seen the scoop?” She pointed it out, then pressed her thumb into damp moulding sand; the imprint held its ridge, firm yet yielding.
Tongs clamped the crucible, and the liquid iron shifted inside with a slow, heavy roll. Paloma lifted the frame, carried it toward the pouring station, then halted midway. The empty space where the fox paperweight belonged now echoed across the open floor, measuring more depth than its two centimetres of metal should command. A draught slipped through the loading bay, sidling past her calves and bending the orange shimmer above the crucible; ash danced in the new current but settled again when the door eased shut. She repositioned the frame, yet her gaze tracked the sand near the cooling slab—only undisturbed grains, save for a second paw print leading toward stacked scrap drums.
The furnace hissed against damp vent holes while Everett poured, the stream descending in a bright, deliberate arc that thickened the air with metallic tang. Mid-pour, Paloma stepped to the drums. A narrow aisle opened between them and the cool wall; the corridor felt compressed, its ceiling of iron rims sloping inward. Halfway along, russet fur slipped through a gap in the wall planking—silent, taut, gone. The iron fox was not in sight; only the living one remained in memory of the space it had crossed. Paloma returned before the stream hardened, sand brushing off her palms.
Back at the moulding bench she pressed her thumb into fresh sand once more, slower than before, leaving a deeper hollow that caught a faint glow from the furnace door.
