English 원문
The teacup beside the warp beam released a thin curl of steam, although the kettle in the corner remained cold.
Ada blinked, set her fingertips on the treadle out of reflex, and the hidden peg slid along its groove with a quiet rasp. As the peg shifted, three warp threads lifted in unison, opening a narrow shed that had not existed a moment earlier. Beneath the frame another rod rolled forward, almost imperceptible, and a thin copper counter clicked once before returning. She had watched the loom often, yet never fathomed that buried counterweight murmuring beneath every throw. The room, already crowded with spools, chalk, and folded samples, hummed in layered rhythms she could almost trace with her pulse.
Drawn by that secret movement, Ada began weaving rows that did not belong to any planned pattern, piling color upon color without pause. Each shuttle pass added another stripe, and the fabric thickened like pages in a book someone kept writing long after the story ended. The accumulated weft pressed outward, pressing the selvages wider until the cloth bowed slightly between the beams. She contemplated the swelling panel, wondering which line carried the extra weight and which line merely echoed it. The studio floor vibrated underfoot, a gentle reminder that every added pick, however trivial, coaxed a new tremor from the wood. The burdened fabric hardly justified itself as a worthy cause; it simply kept growing row by row.
Halfway through a strike of the beater, resistance surfaced: the new rows refused to settle, and the bar bounced back with a dull thud. Ada stopped, palms hovering, the silence between clicks stretching thicker than the wool itself. She traced the cloth until her thumb located one weft line riding fractionally higher than its neighbors, a ridge almost invisible except to touch. A breath later she slid the pick from its tunnel, unpeeling that single row in slow motion so the tightened warp relaxed without protest. The copper counter under the loom clicked again, and she finally fathomed its purpose—not lifting threads, but measuring tension by weight. In that moment the hidden mechanism no longer seemed a noble endeavor executed below; it was merely a listener, reporting every excess she imposed.
She exhaled, removed three surplus bobbins from the bench, and set them back inside the crate, clearing a span wide enough for her elbows. With the ridge gone, the bar swung smoother, and the loom's vibration settled into a steady oscillation that matched her slower breath. The sparrow at the window tilted its head once, then darted away as the shuttle gathered momentum across the renewed shed. Ada watched the gap narrow, decided nothing else required stripping, and eased the beater forward one last time before lifting her foot from the treadle. The shuttle glided onward between the bright threads, its wooden nose still cutting the air.
