English 원문
The ink stick had already shortened to half its dawn length, a dark stub that let Keira gauge the morning’s drift by shadow alone.
She ground the stub in slow circles, the rasp steady, certain this thickness would yield the bold line she always trusted. First stroke down: the brush slid, yet the ink splayed outward, a thin fissure feathering its edge. Her wrist paused mid-air; shoulder muscles stayed half-raised, neither tense nor relaxed. A curtain stirred beside the open window, and a stray draft kissed the paper, dimpling it. She tested another stroke, lighter, but the brush tip refused to spring to a point, its hairs remembering too many previous drills.
Across the table Merritt blew gently on his own sheet. “Ink shifts with the room,” he said, voice no louder than the rasp of the stone. Keira nodded, eyes drifting to the painted seascape hanging on the far wall. Its once-crisp horizon had softened to a hazy band, as though the waves had dissolved into a nebulous dream. The change unsettled her certainty: if pigment could blur inside silk over years, a morning’s humidity might easily coax today’s ink outward. Outside, vines climbed a wooden trellis, leaves overlapped like scales; each breeze rearranged their pattern without warning.
Grinding again felt less like routine and more like a small ceremony whose outcome nobody could promise. She added a single drop from the water spout; the new pool thinned to smokey grey. Instead of repeating the failed character, she curved the brush in an improvised loop, letting the diluted ink wander. The mark spread, broad at first, then tapering where the brush lifted, drying unevenly. She watched the wet sheen retreat toward the centre of the stroke, wondering whether the paper would accept the stain evenly or leave a pale seam when it fully cooled.
