English 원문
Glue and old velvet mixed in the backstage air, giving a sweet, dusty smell. Paint thinner lingered near the prop shelf. Lyra bent beside a wooden turntable built as a moon for tomorrow’s play. A hidden wheel under the disc let the moon spin smoothly. Across the gap, her younger sibling Oswin knelt near a tall rack. Small bulbs dotted a black cloth there, forming a bright constellation when powered. Oswin tested a small crank; each metal gear clicked while the cloth raised and lowered behind the curtain. Two separate rhythms filled the dim space, one broad wheel whirling, one narrow gear train ticking.
While Lyra checked balance, she set the moon turning faster by nudging its rim. The plywood disc began to wobble, and a soft hum developed under its pivot. At the same time, Oswin let the crank rest. The cloth stayed high, but a coiled rope above kept unwinding on its own. Dust rained lightly as the rope slipped. Oswin focused on sorting plastic leaves for a painted branch lying nearby. Neither child watched the rope spiral, and neither child looked back at the spinning moon. Two motions ran side by side, unaware of each other. Cool metal brushed Lyra's knuckles, and a faint vibration passed into her wrist.
Suddenly the unwinding rope reached its last loop, gave a quick reel, and the star cloth dropped. The free end slapped the moon’s rim, knocking the disc off center. The moon spun wildly, bumped the floor, and rolled toward Oswin. Oswin jumped sideways while Lyra grabbed the disc edge. Her fingers could feel it at home when the axle hole realigned with the pivot pin. Oswin whispered, "That was close!" Behind them, the rope coil tightened again. The cloth now hung lower, its bulbs blinking in a new tilted constellation. Stage lights faded on a timer, and thick shadow swallowed the leaning moon and the crooked stars.
