"Coins shine there," Nora called.

A grey pigeon dropped onto the fountain rim. Morning light flashed across the water and revealed a blue pattern on the tiled floor. Mist cooled the air while distant traffic set a steady hum beyond the square. Tiny drops settled on her arms and left a cool tingle. A small amount of crumbs dotted the wet stone near Nora's shoes. Coins winked brightly under each splash. Cool shadow from a nearby plane tree crossed the pale pavement.

The pigeon stepped closer, toes slipping a little on the smooth, damp edge. An uncertain tilt of its head measured the crumbs before its beak darted forward. A knotty twig drifted from the jet and bumped the rim with a sharp tap. Water pushed the twig in a slow circle before releasing it again. The sudden knock rolled one loose coin toward the bird. The coin spun, caught spray, and skittered away along the curved stone. The pigeon lunged, wings half open, but the wet surface offered little friction.

A fresh burst from the centre jet slapped the coin, sending it clinking into deeper water. Ripples slapped the rim, soaked the crumbs, and sprayed the pigeon's feathers. The bird beat its wings hard and lifted above Nora's head, leaving damp prints behind. Sunlight bounced off the rising spray and painted shifting spots on the nearby bench. Another broad wave slipped across the stone rim, covering the scattered crumbs completely. Spray burst upward, then sheeted down and erased the pigeon's prints in one shining sweep.
