English 원문
The cellar carried the faint smell of dry apples and chalk dust.
Blythe stepped down the narrow wooden stairs, steadying a low lantern against her hip. She hoped to reach the rolled papers for a new sketch stored high above the old pickling table. Beside the table a ginger cat explored a narrow shelf lined with empty tin cups. Each cup balanced on a thin plank that barely covered a rough stone ledge. A faint echo tapped beneath the low ceiling, and the cold stone blocks brushed against her sleeve.
Blythe stacked two clay flowerpots, then placed a wooden crate on top like a shaky step. The pile swayed, yet she climbed, one boot pressing the rim until the pots began to tilt. She carried only a vague notion of how steady the improvised stair would remain. She whispered, 'Please stay in place; I need only a moment more, little tower.' At the same time, the cat nudged the first cup, and the plank dropped a fraction. Weight shifted; the cups began to wobble like a slow domino train creeping toward the edge. The falling cup stamped a bright impression into the dust that scattered around its rim.
Blythe straightened, fingers brushing the rolled bundle, just as the plank slapped the stone ledge. That slap sent a tin cup bouncing off, landing on the crate and driving the stacked pots apart. The upper pot slid half a finger-width; the airy column twisted and held its precarious balance. Dust lifted, leaving a thin layer across the cup's dented surface and across Blythe's knuckles. She laughed once, tucked the papers under her arm, and stepped down while the cat watched. Above them, the tilted plank still rocks; below, the loosened pots keep rotating on their narrow rims. A circle of dust widens with each turn, and the quiet clang inside the cellar drifts upward.
