English 원문

From the doorway, Wyatt watched Ula roll the brayer across the glass slab, its short tack rising with each pass. On the slick surface, a damp mark, thin as a fern frond, lingered where the roller had lifted.

The bench carried a shallow warmth from the lamp; the room kept a draft that cooled his forearms through his shirt. Jars of colour stood along the back, steady and bright, and a cherry block rested face-up, its ridges cool under the light. Ula eased that block nearer; her fingertip crossed the valleys, and the reversed image announced itself in bumps and quiet hollows. “It’s warm on this side,” Ula said, gently turning the face toward the lamp.

Wyatt took the brayer the way he handled a kitchen rolling pin, then spread black on the slab until the sound turned sticky. He rolled over the block with an earnest rhythm, expecting even coverage, yet the corners stayed pale where the ridges broke under the lamp’s heat. The damp sheet rested over the wood, edges already cool against his fingers, and a faint draft ruffled one corner. His hands paused, brows knit; the baren waited, flat and smooth, in the center of the bench. Ula steadied the paper’s far edge and said, “Here, the corner sits flat now.” He lunged a little to catch the lifting side before it skated, then set the baren down and began slow circles.

The disc moved in patient orbits, heat building under his palm, while the paper darkened where pressure gathered and stayed pale where it slid. Halfway through, he stopped and lifted a corner; fibres released with a soft whisper, revealing a shape that didn’t match the dark fern he’d pictured. The frond lay white, a path left by valleys; grain showed like faint rain across the leaves, and a double line haunted one edge. They held a brief parley over that doubled edge, heads close, breath cooling the damp surface, then he set the sheet back and pressed in lighter circles.

When the peel finally ran end to end, the print answered the block cleanly, yet a soft echo remained where his first pass had slipped. A breeze from the open window lifted a shaving and set it back down, and the brayer’s tack quieted on the glass as ink skinned. Over by the jars, the wiping rag that began white now wore a gray band from rolled-off skins and test passes he never counted. Wyatt clipped the damp sheet to the line, two wooden pins gripping the paper above the fern.
