English 원문
The hanging scale rocked above a clean rectangle on the rail, two empty clips catching warm light. Nora stepped to the weighing station, checking the chain-bound clipboard while Margot, a horticulturist, waited with a crate list. A tawny dock cat paused by a coil, whiskers forward, nose lifting toward the fishy fog from an open ice box. “Can you see the needle?” Margot said, as a fisherman set a small cask of squid gently onto the pan. Wind came across the quay and set the pan swinging, so Nora did a quick shuffle to stand as a windbreak. Her jacket and shoulders made a calm pocket, and the needle stilled long enough for a number to settle. Sunlight poured bronze across the granite by the mooring posts, while bumpers ticked and rigging hummed in the moving air.
A seam of meltwater slipped from the open ice box lid, ran over a worn groove, and reached the scale’s front leg. The painted tide ruler on the quay wall showed the water three marks down, the gap widening as the minute hand moved. Someone had leveled that leg with folded cardboard, which drank the water and sank a finger’s width into the damp. The pan tipped a hair, and brine inside the cask sloshed toward a half-turned spigot, starting a neat amber drip. The needle crept downward as the cask, relieved of a cupful, read lighter than the clipboard number beside Nora’s thumb. The cat padded nearer along a patch of sun, then stopped short at the wet spot, tail flicking once above the mark. Nora slid a flat plastic lid from a stack of tubs beside the scale and kept her fingers clear of the pan. She knelt and wedged the lid under the sinking leg, raising the pan until the needle balanced in the center. With her other hand, she turned the wooden spigot handle a quarter, and the amber drip narrowed before stopping altogether. Margot read the steadied number, and Nora marked it with a quick line on the clipboard. Across the shallow puddle, a narrow band of gold shivered and slid along the groove toward the drain.
