A quick tap came from the shed door. Dry boards creaked along the clapboard wall.

Cool shade filled the small yard. Kaya and Amos needed a bucket for paint water. "I hear a rattle in there," Kaya said.

Kaya pulled the handle, but the door did not move. Amos tugged too, and a loose bell jingled. Dust slipped down from a shelf inside.

Kaya knelt near the wall and looked closely. She ran her finger under one long board. A thin line broke the paint near the end. An idea came as her thumb found the edge. Kaya wondered about that line and pushed there.

The lower edge shifted, then the top half slid. Hidden joints showed under the overlap, dusty and small. She lifted the segment, and a narrow gap opened.

A broom inside tipped and knocked a metal lid. The lid jumped to the ground with a clap. A jar rolled out, and paper slips scattered. Buttons clicked along the floor and stopped near Amos.

Kaya set the lid on the pot again. It touched the rim, a small reunion of pieces. "It opens from the side," Amos said softly. Kaya reached through the gap and took the bucket. She slid the segment down, and the wall sat closed. Kaya carried the bucket across the yard.
