English 원문
The beater’s thump slid from a brisk knock toward a lower, slower note, and the trough wall trembled under Kieran’s resting palm. Water lapped at the vat’s lip in time with that drop in pitch, a soft murmur between beats. A bead slipped along his brow and vanished at his temple. Across the room, the screw press offered a long, even creak, and a thread of water ticked into the corrugated metal gutter beneath it, each drip finding a ridged tap before running on. Bea stood beside the window, sleeves rolled, and the high light cut a pale rectangle across the vat, turning the surface cloudy and bright by turns as the pulp swirled.
Kieran slid the frame into the vat and lifted; the mesh caught a milky cloud that ran to the corners as he gave it a side-to-side shake. A pale chunk of rag, not yet beaten fine, rode the current and pressed against the screen, making one corner drain sluggishly. He paused mid-shake, breath held, then skimmed the frame’s edge along the surface and coaxed the lump away with a light flick. “Lower now,” Bea said, voice quiet in the warm air. He tipped the frame toward the window to read thickness by brightness; water threaded through and darkened the wood around his knuckles. While he waited for the fibers to settle, he worried a loose thread at his cuff until it thinned and finally parted.
When he turned to couch the new sheet onto felt, something small interrupted that steady rhythm: a bristled brush leaned near the press, moved from its usual hook, its wet tips leaving a fan of dark on the table. The sight checked his hands mid-flip; he set the frame down, then lifted it again, slower. “From the loft,” Bea said, glancing toward the drying rods as a damp sheet whispered overhead. Kieran’s eyes returned to the wooden deckle; a faint nick along its edge caught a glint where the light struck. He raised the sheet to the window again, and a narrow bright stripe, thinner than a reed, ran through the pale rectangle, not a flaw so much as a line he had never noticed in this way.
He pressed the sheet to the felt and lifted the frame cleanly; water sighed outward, then stilled. Over by the gutter, the drip changed rhythm when the sparrow dipped and left again, its wings scratching a brief sound against the rafters. Kieran turned back to the vat as the beater kept its lower note, and he set his palm to the same smooth oval on the trough wall. Vibration met his skin, fine and steady, and the stone felt cooler than before where the tremor rose through it.
