The Sheet That Carried Ash-

English 원문
Lyra plunged the wooden frame into the vat, lifted, and flicked her wrists; water hissed through the mesh while a pale mat gathered on the wires.
Rarely had the loft smelled so earthy. Drips fell like slow precipitation from the hanging rows, tapping her shoulders with a rhythm she once trusted. The beater’s thump sounded lower than yesterday, and the press screw let out a new, metallic groan. Each small change felt harmless alone, yet the accumulation pushed her breath into shorter pulls. Her next step turned into a slight stagger when the floorboard flexed—someone had shifted the felt stack and left the weight uneven.
Her wrists still tingling, she peeled a half-dry sheet from the felt and held it toward the high window. Light revealed darker specks, fine ash embedded among the fibers. Down the corridor, the dormant kiln bore a faint warmth, as though it had cooled only minutes ago. A second sheet showed the same flecks, a third even more. Were the sheets any heavier, the rod above would bow. She set the frame aside, then paused; the room seemed to wait with her, latticed shadows trembling across the damp planks.
She traced the flecks back to the vat, skimming the surface with two fingers. Grit swirled against her skin—cooled cinders that must have drifted from the kiln while no one watched. The certainty that her pulp stayed pure dissolved. She stirred the vat once, watching the languid vortex blur clean water into cloudy grey, and decided not to salvage this batch. Instead, she rinsed the screen, placed it upright to drain, and wiped stray ash from the press handle. The final sheet she flipped onto fresh felt lay thinner than usual, yet its tactile smoothness surprised her. Lyra rolled her sleeves, lifted the wet page, and hung it beside the others; the familiar motion felt foreign against the quiet, ash-dusted air.
