English 원문
Kieran tipped the concave cutter toward a twig on the mature juniper as a wren landed on the courtyard wall, head tilted at the bench. Resin from a fresh snip hung in the air—sharp and clean—over the must of damp moss and the mineral scent of wet akadama. Annealed copper spiraled along a low branch, its satin-orange curve pressed just enough to hold the angle. A gust slipped through the pergola slats and lifted his sleeve; the wren flattened its tail, then hopped along the capstones, light as a leaf. He steadied his wrist. The curved jaws aligned with a breath-wide crescent he meant to remove. Across the pot, barred shadows inched; the cambium’s faint seam waited under fibrous bark that peeled in tidy threads. Somewhere beyond the gate, a single chime rang. He tapped the cutter closed over air, stopped, and opened it again, the metal smelling faintly of oil.
A kettle’s whistle pierced the courtyard, thin and bright like a line scratched on glass. From the doorway, Tatiana said, “That’s the loud one.” Kieran set the cutter on the cedar slat. “I hear it,” he answered, already stepping from sun to the cooler strip near the wall. Inside, steam pressed the kitchen ceiling and the room smelled of iron and heat; he shifted the kettle off the burner and let the lid rattle quiet. Water hissed back to stillness. By the time he wiped a ring from the counter and set two cups in the sink, the brightness through the window had slid. When he returned to the bench, resin and earth met him again, and the wren still held the wall, closer now, shoulders pulsing under its plain feathers.
The pot’s surface had cooled; moss springs felt firmer under a fingertip. He gave the juniper a quarter turn, and the afternoon bars marched by a single quantum along the rim, bringing one wired branch into light and tucking another into shade. The wren dropped from the wall to the bench with a quick zip, then to the gravel tray below the pot; it pecked at the lip and paused over the dry line there. Kieran lifted the copper can and angled its long spout; water sheeted over akadama, each granule darkening before the flow slipped through the mesh to the tray. He held the cutter above the twig again, then set it down and eased a spent coil of soft wire free instead, the ping small as a seed. The bird leaned toward the tray and stared at the growing shine. Water kept threading through the soil and gathering along the shallow rim, and the wren waited. Kieran steadied the copper can, a thin stream meeting the tray beside the small bird.
