English 원문
“What makes that bubble lift?” June leaned toward the S‑shaped glass perched in a corked neck, where a clear bead rose, tilted, and slipped through to the other side. Tobin rested two fingers on the barrel’s cradle; the oak eased a fraction, and the bead obeyed, a soft click of liquid under the single bulb. Light pooled in the water of the lock like a tiny tarn on the stem, its surface bright, then dim, then bright again as the bulb swayed on its cord. Wax around the bung held a ridged edge, lacerated into little cliffs by an old thumbprint, and the glass carried that glow across June’s open palm without warming it.
The rest of the room kept its own pace. A distant clock above the stair ticked, and somewhere near the stone vault a drop gathered, let go, and found the tin pan with a muted tap. Rows of barrels ran to the shadowed wall, a patient bewilderment of curves and gaps; if Tobin tapped a stave with his knuckle, the note landed low or high, never loud, always sure. Bottles lay on their sides in stone alcoves; when he lifted one a finger’s width and set it back, a dark crescent of sediment slid along the glass and settled again, the ring of old sweetness on the inside tracking where the liquid had once rested. Labels had softened to suede; some edges frayed into lacerated fringes, their threads of paper gray with time.
June kept watching the water’s step from one bulb of the lock to the next, then glanced at the pan as a new drop widened its circle. The clock said yes, and the drip said yes, in their separate ways. Both rhythms drifted closer. The bead rose as the tick fell and the drop arrived. Her breath paused.
She had a hand up under the arch, ready to feel for the wet, and stopped short of the stone; the glare on the ceiling slid just enough to show a clear trickle tracing mortar, nowhere near the bung. “Not the barrel,” Tobin said, his voice small in the big cool. She eased a square of cloth along the wall, took away the line, then watched as another drew itself in the same channel from the damp seam above. The lock kept moving at its own pace. A shallow crate on a low rack rocked each time a drip tapped the pan, so she crouched and looked for something steady. A small wooden boat—forgotten toy or wedge—waited under the slat, its keel straight, its mast no taller than her hand. The hull slid forward and met the soil. The rocking stopped. Her handkerchief wore a round bruise of cellar water along its edge. June pushed the little boat deeper under the crate, mast brushing wood, until the box stayed still.
