English 원문
The window’s wooden shutter had stuck halfway, and pale wax freckles had already dried on the bench’s edge. Sweet, waxy air drifted over Sam’s nose, thicker than warm candy, while Colette turned the dial under the pot until the clear surface steadied. A mug of malted milk rested near the cooling stand, sending a toasted smell that mixed with the wax like warm cereal. A small xerophyte in a clay pot sat by the rack, its sandy soil giving off a dry, earthy note. Sam raised a cotton wick on a thin stick, hoping to build an even candle layer by layer.
Warm air carried honeyed wax and toasted grain; damp clay and cotton hovered close to the bench.
He began with a simple plan: dip, lift, sip, wait. Each lift left a sweetness on his tongue and a thin coat on the wick. He counted quietly inside his mouth, the taste of malt helping him pace the pause before the next dip. On the third lift, a pear-shaped drip gathered at the tip and cooled into a bump that smelled faintly of vanilla. Sam tried a small change, rolling the stick between two fingers, letting the wax slide while the layer set. A distant bleat came from the yard, soft and short, like air through a reed, bringing a trace of dry hay through the gap at the window.
Then a cooler ribbon of air slid across the pot. The half-closed shutter shifted on its hinge and narrowed the stripe of light, and the wax surface showed a thin skin. When Sam dipped again, the film folded into serpentine wrinkles that clung to the wick and left faint ridges with a sweet-candle smell. He lifted too late; the topmost line hardened slightly uneven, unlike the earlier layers. Colette stepped beside him, her sleeve brushing a pale wax spot, and held the far end of the stick with a steady hand. “I can hold the stick with you,” she said, voice low, the words floating like steam above the pot. She slid a flat spoon across the surface, skimming the soft skin to one side, where it melted back into the warmer center with a honey-like scent. Sam took another gentle sip, waited for the sweet flavor to fade, and dipped in time with Colette’s slow pull on the stick. Their motions met: skim and dip, lift and wait. The wick thickened into a smoother column, still carrying a faint sugar smell. The tray on the bench bumped the xerophyte’s pot, so Sam set the growing candle a little to the left, near the clay’s earthy scent.
They eased the candle onto the cooling stand among thicker neighbors, each giving off a mild, clean fragrance. From the doorway, the rack shrank into a thin ladder above flour-specked boards, and the pot was only a small gold circle. At the wick’s side, a line no wider than thread held its shape, then cooled.
