Wax Between Gusts-

English 원문
A soft plop sounded as molten wax dripped back into the shallow pan. The honey-sweet scent mingled with the sour, damp odor rising from the indigo vat five paces away, weaving layers through the warm courtyard air. Clara pinched the bamboo stylus and drew a quick line across stretched cotton, but a sudden gust cooled the copper tip; the wax froze halfway, leaving a thin, broken ridge. She gave the stylus a small squeeze near its joint, yet no fresh wax flowed. A gopher popped from a crack along the stone wall, sniffed the earthy landscape, then vanished while the unfinished line hardened like a jagged seam.
She left the wax table and crossed the yard, shoes scraping blue-spotted flagstones. Sour-sweet fumes drifted up from the vat as Joel lifted a dripping test strip; yellow-green drops struck stone and released a metallic tang. An earlier strip had been left hanging nearby, its centre already navy. Clara carried the new piece to the clothesline, fingers sticky with indigo. She pegged it beside others and watched the colour bloom outward, deepening from sea-green toward navy while wind raced between cloth edges. A cloud slid over the sun; the vat cooled silently. To pass the time, she knelt by the wash stream and swirled finished fabric through fresh water. Cold mineral notes bit at her knuckles, and clouds of dye trailed away among pebbles. Behind her, the dye master stood like an unobtrusive guardian, breathing layered smells of wax, cotton, and ferment.
When Clara walked back for more cloth, the abandoned stylus lay where a breeze had rolled it against the frame. The copper cup now touched the edge of the warming pan, so its wax had melted again to a clear, fragrant pool. Without thinking, she waited for the next lull in the wind, then lowered the tip in a slow rhythm learned from dipping fabric. The wax traced a continuous, glossy ribbon across the cotton; no cracks appeared. Yellow smoke-sweet scent rose as the line cooled solid. She hung the cloth aside and stepped back. Above the vat, faint vapour curled on, carrying fermenting dye through the quiet courtyard.
