They walked to a low fruit stand near the road. A seller lifted a basket and nodded to them. "Good morning to you both," he said with a grin. Renn said, "Good morning. Your fruit looks bright today." Renn pointed at the deep purple fruit in front. He reached for a round plum near the top.

His sandal slid on a muddy patch beside the leg. He grabbed the edge, and his elbow touched a tin cup. The cup tipped and water ran into the sand. Wet grains loosened, and the front leg sank a little. The stand tilted, and several plums rolled toward Renn.

One fruit bumped his palm and dropped under the shelf. A scooter beeped nearby, and a bird left the awning. Renn stepped to the side and crouched near the corner. From there, he reached low and caught the rolling plum. The seller wiped the splash and set the cup upright. "Are your sandals okay?" he asked, passing a small cloth.
