Two low tables stood one step apart, under a window. Britt set a long tray across the gap between them. A plastic scoop held dry beans near the front edge. A blue prize ribbon hung from a peg by the tray. Soft afternoon light fell over the wood and metal.

Grey knelt to sort cups on the second table. A small puppy padded in and nosed the low leg. Britt reached to slide the scoop farther from the edge. The puppy’s tail brushed the hanging ribbon near the handle. The loop caught the scoop, and the handle tipped down.

Beans poured onto the tray and struck the first marble. Grey said, "Oh no, rolling beans!" They clicked along the metal strip and gathered speed. Britt raised a hand and watched the line spread. Britt realized the second table sat a little lower. The slope pulled every marble across the gap and over.

Marbles hit a small prize box and pushed it sideways. The box slid into a cup stack and rattled it. Grey moved fast and lifted the near end of the tray. Most marbles rolled back and fell into a shallow bowl. One last marble spun along the rim toward Grey’s thumb.
