Pigeon on the Sill and a Drop Over the Strip -

English 원문
Joelle slipped through the cedar door sideways, ribcage angled to keep her center over the marble, and the balance plate steadied under her hovering hand as a pigeon settled on the high sill with a dry scuff of claws.
She rolled one shoulder down to align her elbow with the pipette, thumb easing pressure until the meniscus met the etched line, and the bulb relaxed to slack between squeezes while the bird sidled three steps in a kind of small stealth, breast low, head tilting toward the warmer strip of light.
Max stood near the shelf, knees soft as he leaned. "It’s warm today," he said, his voice barely above the brass tick of the clock.
Joelle brought a test strip close and let a single drop darken its tip; capillary stain crept farther along the grain on one edge than the other, a neat little limitation the paper disclosed when pushed this way, and she braced her stance to match the counter’s height, hip touching wood as the scent opened sharp, then rounded.
She started a second drop, wrist steadying over the balance beam, and the pointer hovered near center while the pigeon’s wings lifted a finger-width and folded again, not for flight, only for position.
A rap shook the latch down the corridor, short and flat, and the outer door clicked again.
Max’s head turned toward the sound. "Delivery."
Joelle set the pipette in its stand and eased her weight back off the counter; the marble stayed where it always stayed, but her knees unlocked, and the body angle she had built for the pour dissolved as she stepped into the corridor and signed for a small box that pressed gently into her palms.
By the time she returned, the bright layer on the test strip had thinned, and the beam’s pointer held still without her finger near the counterweight; she planted both feet a touch wider than before and hovered the strip near the sill to compare.
Her first assumption—crumbs—lost shape when the bird lowered, toes gripping stone while its body rode the faint lift that rose along the warm frame; she tracked that rise with her forearm, lifting and lowering by half an inch until her shoulder found a new angle that matched the air’s quiet push.
The pigeon tipped forward, weight over its toes, then eased back, and Joelle paused with the pipette raised, not adding the second drop she had prepared; the pause stayed in her fingers, and she chose the smallest change she could make.
She slid one test strip closer to the window and another a handspan behind it; the nearer paper bloomed faster along the same skewed edge, and the farther one lagged, the room’s heat painting its own small map into the fibers while the bird made two brief nods and resumed its stillness.
Max watched from the shelf, heel rocking once on the floorboard. "Here," he said, and held the mixing vial within reach without stepping closer.
Joelle shifted her weight forward over the marble and tilted her forearm, bringing the pipette above the closer strip.
With Joelle’s wrist angled over the paper, the drop slipped free of the glass and traveled toward the waiting tip.
