A Pause in the Long Shed and the Window Ledge -

English 원문
Cleo walked backward along the long shed, feeding combed manila from her leather apron while Vance turned the cast-iron crank at the distant frame.
Between them, the straight sixty-metre aisle held light in bands, the clerestory windows high overhead slicing the air into parallel lanes that receded toward each open end.
Rafters climbed into a shallow vault, their span reading as one long ridge above the centered path.
Beyond the far doorway, the yard’s rectangle framed a slice of sky no wider than a cart.
Her open hands eased the coarse fibres forward, and the twist wave crawled down the span until the top’s approach made the three strands gather and counter-wind.
Then the lay thickened near her waist and the grooved cone hesitated mid-line, its motion small against the shed’s long alignment.
Vance lifted one palm into the air, and the ratchet count stalled in place; his other hand rested easy on the crank’s spoke.
“Twenty-three,” Vance said, his gaze on the distance between hooks and her retreating path.
The three parallel lanes between posts stayed equal, yet the snag sat exactly where the aisle narrowed toward her vantage.
The bars of light shifted a finger’s width as a cloud crossed, then held their spacing again.
Cleo set the bundle down and walked to the window ledge midway down the wall, where a small tin sat beside a wooden stick.
She stirred the linseed dressing with slow circles, and the surface turned a luscious amber that thickened and cleared with every round.
A clean rectangle marked the plaster above the ledge, dust pale around its edges and bare in the middle, the absence squared and bright in the side light.
Across the shed’s length, the opening at the far end seemed narrower than before, a taper drawn by the long, straight sides holding the floor’s centerline.
The windows’ high sills threw long rectangles across the floor that ran true beside the central seam of boards.
On the ledge itself, a faint ring of oil darkened the timber, a circle offset from the rectangle like a clock with no hands.
The dressing swirled one way under her stick while the tin’s rim threw back a tiny counter-ring, and the two paths crossed without touching.
A sparrow cut through the far doorway and left a slim wedge of shade on the floor’s pale strip, then the light swallowed it again.
At the frame, the forming coil lay in even rings, each loop snug inside the last along a steady diameter.
“That reach is straight enough to count on,” Vance said, his finger tracing the air between her place and the frame as he waited.
“The far hook sits dead center for the moment,” he added, his wrist still and his shoulders square by the frame.
Cleo returned to the line, and the serrated comb at her belt caught the light, each tooth lifting a shadow that matched the long shed’s repeating bars.
She lifted a pinch of manila, then paused with the fibres just above the walking path, her eye on the square of clean wall and the tapered view.
Her open palm hovered over the loose end on the leather apron, skin a breath from the coarse strand that waited at the frame’s first hook.
