Light shifts. It touches his eye. He closes one eye. He breathes. A green leaf by the hallway shelf shines wet. A drop gathers at the spout tip.

The drop falls and lands on his sock. It is cool on his toe. Max stays still on the rug. The sock darkens at the toe.
